Icehawks Travel Ice Hockey Program

The Travel Program offers competitive teams at the Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget levels. The age classifications for each team are determined by USA Hockey Guidelines, which are as follows:

Birthdate Age Age

12/31/84
Six Months

Midget
1985 17 Midget
1986 16 Midget
1987 15 Midget
1988 14 Bantam
1989 13 Bantam
1990 12 Pee Wee
1991 11 Pee Wee
1992 10 Squirt
1993 9 Squirt
1994 8 & Under Mite

The Icehawks are registered members of the Capital Beltway Hockey League (CBHL). Within the CBHL, there are several "levels" of play. The Travel Program typically plays at the "A"/"B" level. As A/B level teams, the Icehawk teams play a minimum of 20 league games and an unlimited number of non-league games. Typically, a Travel team will play between 30-40 games per season (often 2 per weekend) with 1-2 tournaments (depending upon the decision of the coaches, players and parents). Tryouts begin in late August and teams will practice twice per week for one hour.

Other facts you should know about the Travel Program include:

  • Home games are played at the Talbot County Community Center
  • All games have 2 CBHL qualified referees
  • Penalties are called and enforced
  • The Mite and Squirt levels are non-check. Pee Wee through Midget allows full body checking.
  • Slap shots not allowed in Mite and Squirt levels
  • Ice time is determined by coaching staff
  • Icehawks jerseys with names on back are purchased by parents
  • Teams typically have 12-15 players
  • Each player receives a yearbook at end of season
  • Each player and family attends year-end banquet

The ESHA Travel teams are always competitive, as exemplified by the participation of the 2001/02 Squirt team in the divisional playoffs. For the 2002/03 season, the Midget team will play a reduced, non-CBHL schedule likely including 10 games with an end date of Thanksgiving.
